According to the current evaluation, the level of direct military threats to Latvia is low, but taking into consideration that the behaviour of Russia has been unpredictable, we must be ready to react to any kind of threats and protect ourselves.

Minister of Defence of Latvia Raimonds Vējonis emphasizes, that Latvia – like other European Union and NATO countries - since the beginning of the crisis in Ukraine has revised its defence and security policy and has taken several actions to increase our readiness to react agains hybrid threats as well as other potential risks. As our Allies also acknowledge, that Russia might pose conventional or hybrid threats to Alliance including the Baltic States, it serves as a common ground to conduct joint deterrence policy.

Minister of Defence reminds that there are already elements of hybrid war in Latvia –  massive propaganda and cyber attacks.

Russia's aggression in Ukraine has shown the dangers of hybrid threats to our security. The hybrid threats is the problem all EU countries must be ready to deal with, and it will be addressed in the discussions to update and reshape the European Security strategy.
