Latvian Minister of Defence to discuss the Common Security and Defence Policy in Athens

On February 20-21 Latvian Defense Minister Raimonds Vejonis will attend the informal meeting of the European Union defense ministers in Athens, Greece.

 

The EU defense ministers will discuss the accomplishments and challenges of the Common Security and Defence Policy as well as development of military capacity and defense industry.

 

The ongoing EU missions and operations as well as the planned EU operation in the Central African Republic will also be discussed.

 

The Latvian National Armed Forces are currently participating in the EU naval operation against piracy off the coast of Somalia, Atalanta, and the EU Training Mission in Mali.

 

The informal meeting of the EU defense ministers will be attended also by NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen and UN Under-Secretary General for Peacekeeping Operations Herve Ladsous.
