Jan. 29, Raimonds Vējonis, the Minister of Defence of the Republic of Latvia met with the Russian Ambassador to Latvia H.E. Alexander Vesnakov to discuss Russia`s military activities near the frontiers of Latvia.

The Minister of Defence pointed out that the objective of increased and often challenging Russian acitivies toward the Baltic States is not understood, which often contributes to tension.

"Russia`s military acitivties near the frontiers of Latvia raise concern about the security situation in the region, particularly in the context of events in Ukraine, therefore I called the Ambassador to explain why vesels and aircraft of the Russian Armed Forces are maneuvering few kilometers from our frontiers. Absent explanation raises questions on what hereby is announced to Latvia and whether it is a Russian force demonstration," explained R.Vējonis.

The Minister called the Russian side to be more open and use the existing confidence-building measures to address concerns about the Russia`s aims and intentions in the Baltic Region.

R.Vējonis stressed the Latvian interest in a constructive dialogue and cooperation with Russia: "We are on good neighborly relations and one of the prerequisites for a good relationship is the ability to discuss openly about issues of concern and vague questions."
